| Newsies |
"In 1899, the streets of New York City echoed with the voices of newsies, peddling the papers of Joseph Pulitzer, William Randalph Hearst, and other giants of the newspaper world. On every corner you saw them carrying the banner. Bringing you the news for a penny a pape. Poor orphans and runaways, the newsies were a ragged army without a leader ... until one day all that changed." What a great opening monologue. What an underrated movie. "Newsies" tells the true story of the beginnings of the child labor strike of the early 1900s. Disney struck artistic (though not actual) gold with this fun, live action musical featuring exceptional singing and dancing by what appears to be a cast of mostly straight(!) men. The soundtrack belongs in the upper echelon of musicals you can rock out to in your car, along side Tommy, Rent, and Cats. I'm just kidding about Cats. That shit is fucking terrible. So check out this delightful movie featuring a young Christian Bale, and that kid who played Vinnie in Dougie Howser. I promise this movie will have you standing on your couch, belting "open the gates and seize the day!" At which point your girlfriend will break up with you and start dating a hockey player. |
